Three top traits to look for in your employees

By February 14, 2019August 21st, 2021No Comments

As some of you may know, I have done contract work for Joe DeSena and Spartan Race in the development of the Spartan X program. As I got to know Joe and the organization I admired their insights as much as they did any contributions I was making. Today I am sharing a recent blog post that Joe DeSena (@RealJoeDeSena) put out that I wanted to share. Joe is a high performer and world changer who has enjoyed elite levels of success in sport and business so I am happy to share some of his insights here on a key topic for many businesses: Traits to Look For In Employees. The original article was part of his email newsletter.

Hiring the right employees is a difficult, maddening process.

I get asked all the time how I find amazing, Spartan-minded employees.

It isn’t easy. You can’t rely on a computer to identify certain characteristics when screening applicants’ resumes.

But these are the top three traits that I recommend looking for if you’re adding someone to your team or company:

1) A belief in the organization’s vision

The organization’s vision should never be a secret. From top to bottom, everyone needs to believe and embody what the company stands for.

When they do, employees are more likely to understand how their work contributes to the company’s goals and are eager to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

2) Resilience

Work is stressful. If you aren’t failing once in a while, you’re playing it too safe. Your employees should be able to handle disappointment, constructive criticism, and failure.

Resilience has a widespread impact. A study shows that “highly resilient workers” are less stressed, have lower absenteeism, higher job satisfaction, and better physical health.

3) Selflessness

Success is not a solitary endeavor. Team members can’t be selfish or work in a vacuum.

Look for employees who don’t need the limelight. They are the ones who will put the needs of other team members and the company above their own and work towards a collective goal.
